Noticed rust marks or peeling on your roof or cladding? Salt and moisture can speed up corrosion on the Coast. Start with a safe ground-level check, not a new coating.
Check the bits rain misses
Under eaves, gutter undersides and fittings, salt can build up without being rinsed away. Your building’s exposure depends on wind, terrain and distance from breaking surf.
Know what to flag
- Rust marks or peeling coatings: note what has changed.
- Blocked or overflowing gutters: debris traps moisture.
- New damp inside: get the cause checked, not just painted over.
Clean gently. Protect your water.
Follow the product’s care instructions. Avoid abrasive tools and harsh methods. Arrange checks at washing intervals or at least yearly, more often if the product requires it.
Tank water? Have the contractor disconnect collection outlets before detergent washing, manage runoff and agree safe reconnection.
Keep both feet on the ground
Take photos from the ground. Leave roof access to a competent contractor with proper safety controls. Corroded sheets, skylights and fragile areas may not support your weight.
Fix the problem before coating
Do not rely on a coating to fix leaks or serious corrosion. Get the roof assessed; severe deterioration may mean replacement.
If coating suits, confirm the product, compatibility, preparation and who handles repairs. Andrew can discuss Gilsonite aluminium coatings; repair tradespeople carry out their own agreed work.
