Two painting quotes can list similar paint products and still describe very different jobs. The difference is often in the existing surface, the preparation allowance and what each contractor has included.

The topcoat is only part of the system

Resene’s preparation guidance links coating performance to suitable cleaning, preparation and priming or sealing. It also advises choosing preparation products for the surface, environment and intended topcoat.

Ask how those requirements apply to your particular building. The answer should relate to what is there, not just the colour you want.

Describe the existing surface

Is it new plasterboard, an already-painted interior, exterior cladding or a metal roof? Has it been repaired before? Are there areas of loose coating or damage?

A short condition description helps Andrew understand the enquiry. If the condition is uncertain, allow for a closer look before the final scope is agreed.

Ask what “prepare and paint” includes

That phrase can hide a lot of assumptions. Ask for the preparation allowance in terms that you can compare with another quote.

  • Which areas are being prepared and painted?
  • What cleaning and surface work is included?
  • What filling or repairs are included, and what is separate?
  • What primers or sealers are proposed where needed?
  • How will completed areas and neighbouring surfaces be protected?

Agree what happens if the condition changes the scope

Sometimes an existing surface needs more work than was visible at the first visit. Ask how additional work will be raised, priced and approved before it goes ahead.

Keep a record of agreed changes. That gives you a clearer connection between the original quote, any extra work and the finished invoice.

Keep the handover information

Ask which product and colour details will be recorded, along with any care instructions for the finished surfaces. Store them with the building’s maintenance records.

A clear preparation scope and a useful handover make the painting work easier to understand now and easier to refer back to later.

THE USEFUL BIT

Compare the preparation, scope and coating system together. A paint name on its own does not describe the whole job.

Your building.
Your next step.

Share the location and a few details. Andrew can talk through the job with you.
